New AR glasses offer a lightweight design and display a large screen in front of your eyes

Xreal, formerly known as nReal, has unveiled its latest augmented reality (AR) glasses, the Air 2 and Air 2 Pro models. These new wearables aim to create a virtual screen in front of the user’s eyes, offering an immersive viewing experience. The company, founded by former employees of Magic Leap, Google, and AMD in 2017, is now accepting pre-orders for the devices.

Xreal’s previous model, the Air glasses, were highly successful and the company aims to further improve user experience and comfort with the new iterations. The focus has been on making them more comfortable for users who spend between one and three hours watching content through the glasses, while still offering superior display quality.

The Air 2 and Air 2 Pro glasses employ Sony’s latest 0.55-inch Micro-OLED panels, providing a resolution of 1,920 x 1,080 pixels in each eye. The maximum virtual display size is 330 diagonal inches, with a refresh rate of up to 120 Hz and a response rate of 0.01 milliseconds or less. Xreal promises accurate color reproduction, 500 nits of brightness, and a contrast ratio of 100,000:1.

The Air 2 Pro glasses offer one-touch immersion control with Xreal Electromagnetic Dimming. Users can choose from multiple settings, including fully transparent for ambient light, a productivity mode that reduces light by 35%, and a blackout setting for immersive gaming or watching movies. Directional audio and beamforming microphones are also included, allowing for high-quality audio and easy smartphone connectivity.

The new AR glasses are 10% lighter and 10% thinner than previous models, weighing in at 72 g (2.54 oz) for the Air 2 and 75 g (2.65 oz) for the Air 2 Pro. Xreal has also introduced AirFit ‘zero pressure’ nose pads for all-day comfort and elastic temples made with softer materials to accommodate users of all head sizes.

The Air 2 glasses are priced at $399, while the Air 2 Pro version is priced at $449. Shipping is expected to commence next month, catering to the growing demand for AR wearables. Xreal aims to provide users with an immersive and comfortable AR experience, demonstrating its commitment to advancing the technology and enhancing user satisfaction.
