Philippines Construction Aggregates: Essential Materials That Drive Infrastructure Growth In The Philippines

Construction aggregates are basic materials like sand, gravel, crushed stone, slag, recycled concrete and geosynthetic aggregates that are used in construction. These materials form the basis of designs for roads, buildings, landscaping and other infrastructure projects. Majority of aggregates are extracted from mines or borrow pits and processed if needed before use. They are categorized into two types – fine aggregates which pass through 4.75 mm sieve and coarse aggregates retained on 4.75 mm sieve.

The Philippines has seen significant economic growth and urbanization over the past decade which has driven huge infrastructure development plans across the country. The megaprojects like roads, bridges, airports, seaports, railroads, buildings, housing etc. all require large quantities of construction aggregates. According to estimates, Philippines’ annual demand for construction aggregates is currently over 200 million metric tons, with demand growing at 4-6% each year. The major sources which meet this demand are quarries, river beds and sea beds. The Philippines being an archipelago with many rivers and coastal areas has abundant reserves of aggregates. However, quantity and quality can vary significantly across regions based on geological factors. Supply chain management becomes critical to ensure materials reach construction sites on time.

Usage Of Aggregates In Major Construction Activities


Road Construction

Base and sub-base layers: Coarse aggregates 20-40 mm in size are used here to provide strength and drainage. Proper compaction is done using heavy machinery.

Wearing or surface course: Finer aggregates 10-20 mm with asphalt or concrete are used as the top driving surface. This layer requires high polish/skid resistance.

Bridge Construction

Concrete structures: Fine aggregates less than 5 mm are mixed with cement, coarse aggregates, admixtures and water to form strong concrete. Slag aggregates can also be used.

Approach embankments: Select quarry run aggregates of varying sizes are used as fill material below bridges to provide support.

Building Construction

The concrete mixes: Based on structuralrequirements, aggregates between 4-20 mm are used along with cement, admixtures to form strong concrete for pillars, floors, walls etc.

Plastering and flooring: Fine aggregates below 5 mm find use in rendering and floor screeding works.

Others

Rail ballast: Crushed aggregates of uniform graded between 40-60 mm provide stabilization and drainage under railroad tracks.

Landscaping: Decorative aggregatesadd aesthetic appeal and drainage in parks, gardens and infrastructure projects.

Key Challenges In The Aggregates


While demand is growing, Philippines’ construction aggregates sector also faces certain regulatory, environmental and operational challenges:

– Sustainable extraction: Unscientific quarrying can damage ecology over time. Rehabilitation of mined areas is important.

– Supply chain bottlenecks: Timely transportation from source to project sites across regions is a challenge due logistical issues.

– Resource optimization: Proper gradation and judicious usage of scarce resources like sand is needed to ensure long term availability.

– Legal compliance: Obtaining environmental clearances and following safety/pollution norms increases project costs for operators.

– Alternative materials: Use of manufactured sand, recycled aggregates etc. will reduce pressures on natural resources in future.

With continued strong economic growth projected, Philippines’ annual construction aggregates demand is estimated to double to 400-500 million tons by 2040. Both government and private sectors are making big investments in expanding road, rail and building infrastructure. This will continue driving aggregates consumption higher. However, focus on sustainability, supply chain efficiencies through technology and use of alternative materials can augment reserves and support Philippines’ infrastructure vision. Well regulated aggregates sector is crucial for the growth trajectory of the entire construction.
