Mazda has taken inspiration from its past showstoppers, such as the RX-Vision and Kai concepts, to create the Iconic SP. The car features sleek curves bathed in deep-red paint, giving it a truly captivating presence. Additionally, the Iconic SP pays tribute to Mazda’s roots by incorporating several iconic design elements from its past models.
One of the standout features of the Iconic SP is its rotary-extended EV powertrain. This unique system combines a two-rotor rotary engine with electric drive technology, allowing for range-extending battery charging. Mazda aims to address the issue of emissions by suggesting that the rotary engine can run on carbon-neutral fuels like hydrogen.
The introduction of the rotary powertrain follows Mazda’s launch of the MX-30 e-Skyactive R-EV in Europe. This model features a plug-in hybrid layout with a 17.8-kWh battery, providing over 52 miles of pure-electric range before the rotary engine kicks in. The system also has the capability to export electrical power for external use, making it versatile for various scenarios.
In addition to the rotary powertrain, the Iconic SP also showcases hidden headlights, reminiscent of Mazda’s past models like the RX-7 and MX-5 Miata. However, Mazda has given a modern twist to this design by incorporating switchable body-color panels that cover the slim headlamps like eyelids. This innovative approach maintains the car’s sleek aesthetic, whether the lights are exposed or covered.
The Iconic SP’s design continues with its flowing curves, showcasing an hourglass figure created by concave sides between the wheel arches. The rear fascia follows a minimalist design with backlit center lettering and dual-round tail lamps. With a length of 164.5 inches, the Iconic SP falls between the MX-5 and the previous-generation RX-8, ensuring a balanced weight distribution for optimal driving dynamics.
Masahiro Moro, Mazda’s representative director, president, and CEO, emphasized the company’s commitment to delivering pure joy and an inspiring mobility experience. Mazda aims to shape the future alongside its partners and fans who share the same love for cars. Moro’s statement hints at the possibility of a production version of the Iconic SP becoming a reality in the near future.
